Self Diagnosis is never beneficial and should never be practices
All of us at some point have turned to Google to look up some health related concern or the other. We may have found a magical cure for a splitting headache on the internet once, but does that mean we should solely rely on the expertise of a virtual entity to decide and deliver on our fates? well it is possible to do that but my sincere advice would be not to.
The risks associated with self diagnosing over the internet or otherwise can be severely grave. A rash on your arm could very well be just an allergic reaction as the internet would tell you or you would assume but the chances its a symptom of something more serious should not be denied. Let’s also not forget that many illnesses share similar symptoms.
For example vomiting or nausea can be symptoms preceding motion sickness stomach flu, indigestion, ulcers, food poisoning, drug overdose or even gall bladder-related diseases. What are the chances that your diagnosis would help you reach just the right conclusion to your condition? What are the chances that the internet would provide you with the exact solution to your specific concern? More probably you will either be left more confused causing you unwarranted anxiety or you will just decide you have no serious issue.
Only a thorough clinical investigation performed by a trained professional physician can diagnose your condition accurately.
Another thing which must be realised is that many of these websites on the internet are loaded with bogus information. And even if this information is not exactly either. Much of the content on these websites is filled in by content writers who practice writing under alias names using false profiles of dieticians nutritionists and medicinal experts. As unethical as that may be it is also very dangerous and risky for the patient. These writers use information existing on the internet accessing it via medical journals. it may be argued that the source of the information is reliable but it must be realised that even if so when these writers interpret what they read in these journals their stream of thought may be conflicting with a professional doctor’s. To put it into simpler words for me a stomach ache and gastrointestinal discomfort are the same thing but a physician would be appalled if i say that out loud
Undoubtedly the internet is a great tool to understand and learn more about a certain condition. but not to diagnose it. A misdiagnosis does not just end there. It is followed by wrong self prescriptions possible aggravating a condition which probably did not even exist in the first place or vice versa . Self diagnosis may just become your self built pathway to avoidable maladies. Do not negate the importance of physicians. When it comes to health it is always better to be safe than sorry.
