Eye Shadow Tricks to Play Up Your Eye Shape

Get celeb-inspired tips for how to make your eyes look bigger, brighter, and more awake — no matter your eye shape.

Deep-Set Eyes

For deep-set eyes like Keira Knightley's, Mia Silverio, makeup artist at the Paul Labrecque Salon and Spa, says you should start by applying eyeliner from the inner corners of your eyes to the outside, ending in a straight line or small cat eye. Then highlight below the brow bone and the inner corners of your eye with a light eye shadow.
To show contrast between the highlighted parts of the eye, take a medium eye shadow color and lightly apply it above your lid. Finally, apply a darker color shadow along the eye's crease (do this very lightly). Blend the shadow from the outside going toward the middle of the eye in order to give more shape to your lid.

Almond-Shaped Eyes

If you have almond eyes like Beyoncé, you can use the deep-set eye application technique, but follow the shape of your own eye. You can also use darker shadow if your eyes aren't as deep set.

Downturned Eyes

Downturned eyes like Camilla Belle’s need a little lift, so your eyeliner will play the most important role, says Silverio. Start by using your shadow to highlight and shade the same way you would for a deep-set or almond shaped eye — the difference is your eyeliner should be much heavier.
After applying the shadow, swipe on your eyeliner starting at the inner corners and extend it all the way to the outside. If you want something a bit more dramatic, try doing a cat eye
