A toothpicks' skinny shape, sharp ends, and lightweight design make it a helpful household tool. That's why you should always have some in your pantry for problems like these.
1. Fix a wobbly chair:
A toothpick might be just what you need to make a garage sale find or a beloved, old seat sturdy again. Just jam one into the spot where the chair’s loose leg meets the seat, and break off any excess.
2. Clean your showerhead:
After you let the fixture soak in vinegar overnight, use a toothpick to clear any leftover, loosened debris to help your water flow freely again.
3. Fill in stripped screw hole:
Repeatedly changing out hinges or knobs can wear down a screw's hole. Fill the extra space with a couple toothpicks, and so it fits snugly again.
4. Sew on a button:
Use a toothpick to create space between your coat or blouse and the new button to allow for the bit of roominess that helps a button do its job.
5. Fill in small holes in wooden boards:
When repurposing a shipping pallet or working on a project with reclaimed wood, fill any holes you don't want with toothpicks. They'll hold any stain or paint just like the rest of the board.
6. Mark meals:
If your family likes their burgers in a range of doneness, differentiate the "well-dones" from the "medium-rares" with colored toothpicks.
7. Fix a tear in your nail:
To try to save your manicure, use a toothpick to apply nail glue to the underside of the nail.
8. Clean a brush:
A toothpick can help tease out hair stuck in the vents and crevices of your (or your pet's) brush.
9. Press a reset button:
It's almost as if electronics manufacturers created their devices with toothpicks in mind.
10. Test a houseplant's soil moisture:
If you'd rather not plunge your finger into a plant's pot, get a toothpick to do the dirty work. If it comes out wet and covered in soil, you can wait a bit longer before watering again.
