Have you ever wanted to create your own nail polish color before? If so, this tutorial should be right up your alley.
What you’ll need:
-A pigment or eyeshadow of your choice.
-Clear nail polish.
-A container to put your nail polish in.
-A separate brush so you don’t alter the clear nail polish. ( We used a Makeup Geek Eyeshadow Smudge Brush.)
-A plastic sandwich Bag.
Our Suggestion is to use MAC (see our selection of MAC Pigment samples). We tested Ben Nye’s pigments as well colors were wonderful, when mixed with the clear nail polish it clumped together and didn’t go on as smoothly. When MAC was mixed with the clear nail polish, it mixed well and went on smoothly.
How To use:
Step 1:
Choose a pigment or an eyeshadow of your choice. (We chose Makeup Geek’s Razzleberry.)
Step 2:
If you are using eyeshadow put it in a bag to crush it up.
Step 3:
Start breaking the eyshadow up. We used the back of our smudge brush to break it. You can use almost anything, but be careful not to puncture the bag while crushing your shadow up.
Step 4:
You want your shadow in pigment form, the more broken up the better. If you have chunks in your shadow it can make the nail polish chunky as well.
Step 5:
Once you have crushed up your shadow, cut a small hole in the bottom of the bag.
Step 6:
Pour the pigment from the bottom of your bag into the container of your choice. We used an empty pigment jar.
Step 7:
Time to break out the clear nail polish! You do not need to purchase a special name brand kind. Dollar store nail polish will work just as good. We used L’oreal 210 clear nail polish.
Step 8:
Take and pour your clear nail polish into your pigment. You do not need a precise amount of clear polish. We kept pouring until there was about as much polish as their was pigment. The more polish the better, and smoother it’ll go on.
Step 9:
Start stirring up your pigment and your polish. You can add more polish or pigment if needed.
Step 10:
Congratulations!! You have just created your very own nail polish color!
Step 11:
Start painting your nails!
Step 12:
When you first apply the nail polish it will come out a matte color (as shown on middle and pinky finger). You can take your clear nail polish to give them a nice shine (as shown on pointer and ring finger).
Important side note: Your nail polish you have created dries FAST! Make sure that you use it quickly or put it in a container to keep it from drying out. If it does start drying while you are painting your nails, add a little bit of clear polish to it, and it should be as good as new!
How to Make Matte Nail Polish:
Matte nail polish is a hot trend in the fashion realm right now, but if you don't want to run out and buy a bottle or prefer to “DIY” it, you can make your own matte polish at home. Here are a few different ways you can make it.
1*Using Powder:-
1.Pick your powder.
Cornstarch is the most common powder used in nail polish crafts, but you also have the option of using cornflour, baking powder, or baby powder.
*To make the powder easier to work with, pour a little into a small, shallow bowl with a wide mouth. You need to use a container that you can easily reach into and see into. A custard dish or ramekin is ideal, but in the absence of a container, you could also use a piece of aluminum foil.
2.Paint your nails.
Paint your nails with a normal nail polish in the color of your choice. Take your time, but do not let the polish dry completely as you work.
*Let the polish dry just enough so that you can briefly touch it with a makeup brush without the bristles getting coated in liquid polish. It should still be more watery than tacky, though, since tacky nail polish has a tendency to trap anything that comes into contact with it.
3.Brush the powder over your nails.
Take the makeup brush and dip it into your powder, coating the top of the bristles. Gently brush the powder onto your still-wet nail polish, creating an even coat. Let it sit on your nails for roughly 60 seconds.
*Make sure that your nails are evenly covered with the powder. If there are gaps in the powder, there will be gaps in the matte effect.
4.Brush the powder off your nails.
Use your makeup brush to gently dust the powder off your nail polish, removing all the specks completely.
*Make sure that the brush is clean and free of powder before you do this. Otherwise, you may accidentally put more powder on your nails instead of taking it off.
*If the polish has gotten too tacky and the powder dried into the polish, dip the tip of your brush into water and try brushing the powder off again. This should help remove the stuck powder.
5.Repeat if necessary.
If you were only able to complete this method on one hand at a time, repeat it with the other hand now.
-Paint your nails.
-Brush the powder over your nails.
-Let the powder sit for 1 minute.
-Remove the powder by brushing it off.
2*Using Powder:-
1.Pick your powder.
Cornstarch is the most common powder used in nail polish crafts, but you also have the option of using corn flour, baking powder, or baby powder.
*Cornstarch and cornflour are somewhat easier to work with, since these powders tend to have a less dramatic impact on how thick the finished polish is while creating a strong matte effect. That said, they are more likely to get clumpy beforehand, so you will need to pay special attention to this.
2.Pour a little nail polish into a container.
In a clean, small cup or other container, pour a little puddle of nail polish, choosing whichever color you desire.
*Note that a glitter nail polish will never look very matte, even if you complete the process as accurately as possible.
3.Slowly mix in the powder.
Gradually add a little of your powder into the nail polish, stirring as you work, until it thickens slightly without turning clumpy. The exact amount you'll need can vary depending on the type of powder you use and the consistency of the polish you use.
*Make sure that the powder is sifted before you add it in. This is especially important when using cornstarch or corn flour. If you add lumpy powder to the liquid nail polish, you will have a harder time getting the matte polish to be smooth.
*For baby powder and baking powder, you will need to use roughly on part powder to every two parts nail polish.
*For cornstarch and cornflour, you can use as much as one part powder to one part polish. Never use more powder than polish, though.
4.Use and save as desired.
After mixing the polish and powder together, you can paint your nails as you normally would. If there is extra matte polish afterward, you can pour it into an empty nail polish bottle or other small, resealable container for later use.
*Using Eyeshadow:-
1.Scrape off a little eyeshadow.
Use a toothpick to scrape powdered eye shadow, in whichever color you choose, into a disposable plastic or paper cup.
*This can be a good project to try if you have old eyeshadow lying around that it no longer safe to use on your eyes, or eyeshadow in a color that you would like on your nails but not on your eyes.
*As you scrape off the eyeshadow, it should be a very fine powder.
*Note that if you are only using eyeshadow and no cornstarch, then the amount of eyeshadow you use should be greater than the amount of clear polish used.
2.Add cornstarch, if desired.
The eyeshadow should give you a little matte effect on its own, especially if it already had matte properties. For a stronger matte appearance, however, stir the eyeshadow together with equal parts cornstarch.
*The two powders should be as thoroughly distributed as possible. You should not see any clumps of color or clumps of white. Instead, you should be left with an evenly speckled powder.
*Break up any lumps in the eyeshadow and cornstarch mixture using your toothpick or sift the ingredients until light and powdery. If you add liquid polish while there are lumps in this mixture, it will be much harder to produce a smooth matte polish.
3.Mix in a little clear polish.
Gradually pour a small amount of clear nail polish into the eyeshadow mixture, stirring as you work. Stop adding polish once the solution thickens slightly, forming a cohesive yet thick liquid.
*Pour slowly to avoid adding too much on accident. If you add too much, you should still be able to use it as a polish, but the matte effect may not be as visible.
4.Use and save as desired.
You can paint your nails as you normally would once the ingredients are thoroughly combined and smooth. If there is extra matte polish afterward, you can pour it into an empty nail polish bottle or other small, resealable container for later use.
*Do not let the mixture sit out too long since it may dry out and solidify into a gooey, unusable mess.
*Using Mica:-
1.Pour nail polish base into a bottle.
Use a clean, empty nail polish bottle and pour the base into the majority of the bottle, letting it rise to a point just below the shoulder of the bottle.
*Work in a well-ventilated area. The fumes from nail polish base can be extremely potent, and working in an enclosed space can cause headaches, nausea, and other possible respiratory or sinus conditions.
*Do not fill the bottles above the shoulder. If you do, you will not have enough room to mix the ingredients together.
*Keep a clean rag handy in case some of the polish base gets on the rim. If it does, wipe it off; otherwise, the base could dry and end up adhering the bottle closed.
2.Drop in a few mixing balls.
These are the same metal mixing balls used in commercial nail polish. Add a couple to the bottle since this matte nail polish will require a lot of shaking and mixing.
*Two to three metal mixing balls should be enough.
*The diameter of each mixing ball should be about 1/8 inches (3.175 mm). Choose mixing balls made of stainless steel for the best effect.
3.Add the mica.
Use a miniature funnel to pour several scoops of powdered mica into the bottle and the polish base.
*Add about nine mini scoops to the polish base. This exact amount can vary depending on the instructions provided on the mica you purchase, though, so read the label before proceeding.
*If possible, get mica that is labeled as being "lip safe," "hand safe," or "skin safe" to reduce the risk of irritation.
*Avoid opalescent or shimmer mica, since these tend to retain their sheen even after undergoing this process.
4.Seal the bottle and shake.
You will need to shake the two ingredients together for several minutes to combine them evenly enough. Stop shaking once the mixing balls no longer sound as loud or as rapid.
*You should twist the cap of the bottle around until you hear it click into place. If the bottle is not completely sealed, you could end up with a mess that could leak onto the outside of the bottle. Even if it only leaks into the cap, that can still make it difficult to open the cap afterward.
5.Scoop in a little cornstarch.
The mica will not have much of a matte effect, so the addition of cornstarch is needed to produce this. Use a miniature funnel to pour a few small scoops of sifted cornstarch into the bottle of the combined polish. Shake once more to combine.
*Only add 5 to 6 scoops. More will produce a greater matte effect, but it also increases your risk of thickening the polish too much.
*Make sure that the cornstarch is sifted before you add it in. If you add lumpy powder to the liquid nail polish, you will have a harder time smoothing out the final matte polish, and it may appear lumpy when you use it to paint your nails.
6.Use and save as desired.
You can paint your nails as you normally would once the cornstarch has been thoroughly combined and the polish is smooth. You can cap and save the remaining bottle as you would with a normal or commercial polish.
